Just for fun I thought I would see if I could track down all the non-VAG diesels* for sale in the US in 2016 along with who actually makes the motor.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
There are (more or less) 14 Diesel engines in the light/medium duty market or thoseSo here is the breakdown
2 are US made
3 are Italian (VM Motori was owned by GM/Fiat now entirely FCA)
4 are German made
3 were designed in the UK
and 2 were joint projects between US domestic makes (GM and Ford) and foreign firms (AVL/Isuzu)
For engine configuration:
5 I4
1 I5
2 I6
4 V6
3 V8
Quite a variety if you ask me.
Half of these engines are “Heavy Duty” only, which is a less stringent emissions category. This includes trucks with a GVWR of 8501 lbs or more like the Titan XD, Ford Super Duty, Ram/GM 2500/3500, and heavy cargo vans (passenger or cargo) like the Transit and sprinter. With the case of the vans, even though the engines are small, they are NOT certified for use in light trucks or passenger vehicles.
Now I will say that many of these engines that started life as foreign engines (to US markets) have been substantially reworked for US emissions and NVH standards. In the case of the Canyorado, for example, there has been a lot of emissions, and NVH work done by GM in addition to the base motor.
It should also be noted that many of these are global engines with design happening one place, with support from another and manufactured in another entirely.
*excluded until all their VW/Audi/Porsche engines are clear and free

I’M SORRY WHAT.
LITERALLY UNTIL NOW I THOUGHT THAT A 2 TON CAR WAS REALLY HEAVY. They’re like freaking planets on wheels. (And very often gross chrome wheels.)

Are you looking at curb weight or the GVWR? Those are vastly different. I’d be willing to bet that you are looking at curb weight.
I did a Google for “Nissan Titan XD GVWR” and got 8,600 to 8,990lbs. Which is in line with it being in the next EPA class.
For reference, my Silverado’s GVWR is 9,200lbs. Mainly so that in some states, it doesn’t trigger additional licensing fees by having a GVWR over 10K.

GVWR is GROSS vehicle weight rating. It’s the maximum safe weight of the truck plus passengers plus cargo. You’re looking at the “curb weight,” the weight of an unloaded, unoccupied truck with all fluids and a full tank of fuel. Trucks with a GVWR of over 8,500 lbs are exempt from EPA/CAFE fuel economy standards (which is why you never see MPG ratings on their window stickers) and I think get to play under slightly looser emissions standards.

The Titan XD was intentionally made heavy so that it could:
a. accommodate the 5.0 cummins
b. Skirt the tougher 2a emissions regs that engine wouldn’t have a prayer of meeting.
Which is why they are in this strange middle ground between half ton and three quarter ton, its also why they are offering a regular non-XD Titan. Seems like a bone headed move to me.

Oh no I wasn’t correcting him or anything, I just found the first weight I saw for that car. Until I read that I never would’ve IMAGINED a CATEGORY for cars that weighed THAT MUCH.

the only mild nitpick I’d bring up is where you use the term “manufacture.” The 3.2 Powerstroke in the Transit was designed in the UK, but is manufactured in South Africa. The 6.7 was designed by Ford North America with Ford of Europe and AVL consulting, but is manufactured in Mexico.

Yeesh VM still makes that bloody R428. I remember the Jeep Liberty from 15 years ago already had that engine.

My comment is more philosophical in nature. I’ve owned a few VW diesels from the late 70s/early 80s. I worked on them, too. When California switched to un-sulphurated diesel fuel, my injector pump failed and I replaced it — myself — and saved my receipt for something like two years, then got my $300 back from the state. I also owned an ‘84 Jetta turbodiesel that I would probably still be driving except some clown hit it. (I got $1,000 cash from him and $500 for the hulk because some guy wanted the engine.)
By brother-in-law was a manager for a California city up north and he was responsible for the city’s fleet, including all of the horse-piss-consuming ecodiesels. Those latter were a debacle and the city decided it would no longer buy any diesel-engined fleet vehicles. (That city was also forced to scrap all of its dependable, non-horse-piss-consuming diesel-powered vehicles...)
Diesel seemed like a good thing at one time, but now I am skeptical. You get more energy content per unit volume of diesel over gasoline, but you pay more per gallon over gasoline, and you also get a much different mix of particulates and waste gases. So for automotive applications, at least, I’m not sure diesel makes much sense.

Well, they’re not cars. You’d be looking at Bentley or Rolls-Royce for cars that weighed that much.

for Passenger cars, I tend to agree. However for heavy loaded applications Diesel’s stoikiometry and torque characteristics are ideal for that application.

That 2.8L Duramax is also an odd-ball. Designed by VM Motori, with the head modified by GM to get the jake brake, and assembled in Thailand.

I really enjoy interacting with you and some of the others here. As a teacher, I am always curious about what others do. Your comments here are always well informed and well composed and fun. As it happens, I have a couple of burning questions about some techniques I’ve seen in a couple of videos and I’d like to figure out how they were done.
